A chair is a type of furniture used for sitting, consisting of a back, and sometimes arm rests, commonly for use by one person. Most of the time chairs have the seat raised above the floor level, supported by four legs.  For many centuries a chair  was an article of state and dignity, and not for every days use.

“The chair” is still extensively used as the emblem of authority in the House of Commons in the and in and in many other settings such as academic departments. For everyday life benches, stools and chests where used for sitting. Only in the 16th century chairs became commonly used for seating anywhere.

In Europe , it was due to Renaissance that the chair ceased to be a privilege of state, and became a standard item of furniture for everybody who could afford to buy it.

The 20th century saw an increasing use of technology in chair construction. Many architects/designers have been experimenting with the new technologies. They were responsible for many iconic designs. Arne Jacobsen   designed a metal legged chair called the ANT chair. By using the single-form injection technology  Verner Panton  in 1960 has designed the  stacking 'Panton' chair.

Next, the ergonomic chair has been developed. The best ergonomic chair design is the one which provides the most support and comfort for you. While FATBOY all ergonomic chairs are built to provide extra back, shoulder, neck, and wrist support, there are features you can include in your choice of an ergonomic chair design to ensure that it is the best possible purchase you can make. Charles Eames was a designer who by  incorporating mechanical technology ( swivel and tilt mechanism supported by a five star aluminium base) made the chair adjustable.

The modern movement of the 60s produced new forms of chairs such as the BUTERFLY chair designed by Karim Rashid or the  bean bags. Technological advances led to moulded plywood and laminate chairs, as well as chairs made of leathers and polymers. For watching TV or movies EASY chairs have emerged on the markets

There are different names for various chair styles .A chair without a back and arm rests is called a STOOL, and if raises up, a BAR STOOL (for adults) or a HIGH CHAIR (for children). A chair with a back is called a DINING CHAIR. A chair with arms is called an ARMCHAIR or OCCASSIONAL CHAIR. If a chair incorporates a folding action footrest then it is called a RECLINER CHAIR. Armrests will support part of the body weight through the arms if the arms are resting on the armrests. Armrests have the further function of making entry and exit from the chair easier. Armrests should support the forearm and not the sensitive elbow area, hence in some chair designs, the armrest is not continuous to the chair back, but is missing in the elbow area.

A  chair having a semicircular form is known as a POD CHAIR  or if it has a deep base  and is upholstered   then it is known as a TUB CHAIR
