A CHAIR is a type of furniture used for sitting, consisting of a back and sometimes arm rests, commonly for use by one person. Most of the time chairs have the seat raised above the floor level, supported by four legs.Today we cannot imagine life without chairs, yet for many centuries a chair was an article of state and dignity and not for everyday use.The chair was, and still is, used as the emblem of authority in the House of Commons in the UK and in Canada and in many other settings such as academic departments. For everyday sitting benches, stools and chests were used. Only in the 16century chairs became commonly used for seating anywhere. In Europe, it was due to the renaissance that the chair ceased to be a privilege of state and became a standard item of furniture for everybody who could afford to buy it. The 20 century saw an increasing use of technology in chair construction. Many architects and designers by experimenting with the new technologies produced many iconic chair designs. Arne Jacobsen designed a metal legged chair called the ANT CHAIR.By using the single-form injection technology Verne Panton has designed the stacking PANTON CHAIR. Then the ergonomic chair has emerged that provides the most support and comfort. It provides extra back, shoulder, neck, and wrist support.Charles Eames was the designer who by incorporating mechanical technology; swivel and tilt mechanism supported by an aluminium base, made the chair adjustable. The modern movement of the 60s produced new forms of chairs such as the BUTTERFLY CHAIR designed by Karim Rashid.Technological advances led to molded plywood and laminate chairs, as well as chairs made out of leathers and polymers. As watching TV and movies at home became more popular EASY CHAIRS have emerged on the market.

There are different names for various chair styles. A chair without a back and arm rests is called a STOOL, and if raised up-a BAR STOOL(for adults) or a HIGH CHAIR (for children). A chair with a back is called a DINING CHAIR. A chair with arms is called an ARMCHAIR or OCCASIONAL CHAIR. Armrests will support part of the body weight through the arms if the arms are resting on the armrests. Armrests have the further function of making entry and exit from the chair easier. Armrests should support the forearm and not the sensitive elbow area, hence in some chair designs, the armrest is not continuous to the chair back, but is missing in the elbow haIf. A  chair that incorporates a folding action footrest  it is called a RECLINER CHAIR . A deep chair having a semicircular form is known as a TUB CHAIR.

In recent years we have seen an  increasing trend for "statement" chairs to liven up neutral living areas with bold patterned upholstery making a come back
